چکیده

This paper presents a customizable system used to develop a collaborative multi-user problem solving game. It addresses the increasing demand for appealing informal learning experiences in museum-like settings. The system facilitates remote collaboration by allowing groups of learners to communicate through a videoconferencing system and by allowing them to simultaneously interact through a shared multi-touch interactive surface. A user study with 20 user groups indicates that the game facilitates collaboration between local and remote groups of learners. The videoconference and multitouch surface acted as communication channels, attracted students’ interest, facilitated engagement, and promoted interand intra-group collaboration— favoring intra-group collaboration. Our findings suggest that augmenting videoconferencing systems with a shared multitouch space offers new possibilities and scenarios for remote collaborative environments and collaborative learning.

A Constraint-Based Collaborative Environment for Learning UML Class Diagrams

COLLECT-UML is a constraint-based ITS that teaches objectoriented design using Unified Modelling Language (UML). UML is easily the most popular object-oriented modelling technology in current practice. We started by developing a single-user ITS that supported students in learning UML class diagrams. The system was evaluated in a real classroom, and the results show that students’ performance in...

Issues and Experiences Designing and Implementing Two Group Drawing Tools

Groupware designers are now developing multi-user equivalents of popular paint and draw applications. Their job is not an easy one. First, human factors issues peculiar to group interaction appear that, if ignored, seriously limit the usability of the group tool. Second, implementation is fraught with considerable hurdles. This paper describes the issues and experiences we have met and handled ...

Remote sensing, diagnosis and collaborative maintenance with Web-enabled virtual instruments and mini-servers

Optimised maintenance can reduce operating costs by demanding less resources and avoiding equipment breakdown, hence ensuring that daily manufacturing and production will not be interrupted. Web-based maintenance is one of the most efficient methods for optimising maintenance. The Web-based maintenance system that we have developed uses virtual instruments, to provide remote sensing, monitoring...

Practices and technologies for collaborative informal learning in Remote Schools

Project CULT aims to create a cooperation platform (hardware/software/practices) for the benefit of schools that reside in remote (rural, islands) areas. For this purpose, we are employing both established and novel interaction and communication technologies. Moreover, we are working closely with schools and teachers, in order to leverage their ability to adopt and adapt technologies in ways th...

Multi-User Interface for Group Ranking: Lessons from Analysis, Design and Implementation of a Prototype

The proliferation of interest in collaborative computer applications in the past decade has resulted in a corresponding increase in the interest in multiuser interfaces. The current research seeks to contribute to an understanding of the design of multiuser interfaces for a group ranking task, and to the process of design. User requirements were identified by observing groups perform the rankin...
